Christ-Centered Advent Traditions for Toddlers and Preschoolers

Activities & Resources • By Little Lamb Studios

December moves fast for a family with young kids — a few simple traditions can slow it back down around Jesus. The four weeks of Advent, explained simply for ages 2–6, are Hope, Peace, Joy, and Love.

“To us a child is born. To us a son is given... His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” (Isaiah 9:6, WEB)

Three Tangible Toddler Traditions

The Straw for Jesus Manger: add a piece of soft straw or yarn to a small wooden manger for every kind deed done that week, preparing a comfortable place for baby Jesus.

The Flameless Toddler Wreath: safe battery-operated candles, lit each week with a short song and simple prayer.

Read-Aloud Nativity Countdown: one gentle, Christ-centered picture book each night before bedtime.

Good News of Great Joy

“For there is born to you today, in David's city, a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.” (Luke 2:11, WEB)
“I am the light of the world. He who follows me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12, WEB)

Both passages work beautifully read aloud on Christmas Eve.
