Kindness is one of the first lessons children learn, and the Bible speaks about it often. Here are four short verses to read with your child, each with a simple question to start a conversation. (Verses are from the World English Bible.)
1. Be kind to one another
“And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you.” (Ephesians 4:32)
Talk about it: When did someone forgive you? How did it feel?
2. Treat others the way you want to be treated
“As you would like people to do to you, do exactly so to them.” (Luke 6:31)
Talk about it: What is one kind thing you would like someone to do for you today? What can you do for someone else?
3. Speak gently
“A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” (Proverbs 15:1)
Talk about it: What is a gentle way to say “no”?
4. Give with a happy heart
“Let each man give according as he has determined in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” (2 Corinthians 9:7)
Talk about it: What could we share with a neighbor this week?
