Bedtime doesn't have to be complicated to be meaningful. Some of the most peaceful nights come from the simplest routines — the same few steps, in the same order, every single night. A short story, a short song, and a short prayer can turn the last ten minutes of the day into a moment your child looks forward to, and one that quietly builds their faith along the way.
If you're looking for more ideas to support your family's faith at home, our resources for parents page has additional tools built specifically for moments like this one.
1. Pick One Short Story
You don't need a long chapter book at the end of a long day. One short story — a picture book, a Bible story retold simply, or a read-aloud video — is enough. The goal isn't length, it's consistency. Choosing the story ahead of time (even the night before) removes the "what do we read tonight?" negotiation that can drag bedtime out. If reading aloud yourself isn't in the cards some nights, a short read-aloud video can fill the same role.
2. Sing One Simple Song

Music settles kids down in a way that talking often can't. A single, familiar children's worship song — sung together or played softly — signals that the day is winding down. It doesn't need to be elaborate; the same song, night after night, becomes part of the comfort of the routine itself. Over time, kids often start humming or singing it on their own, which is a quiet but real sign the routine is sinking in.
3. Say One Short Prayer Together
Keep it brief and keep it theirs. A short, simple prayer — thanking God for one good thing from the day and asking for a peaceful night — teaches children that prayer is a normal, unhurried part of life, not a performance. Let your child add their own words if they want to. Some of the most memorable prayers are the unscripted ones kids come up with themselves.
4. Keep the Same Order Every Night
The single biggest thing that makes a bedtime routine work isn't which story or which song — it's repetition. Story, then song, then prayer, in the same order, night after night. Predictability is what helps a child's body and mind understand that bedtime is coming, which usually means less resistance and an easier transition to sleep.
Resources to Make This Easier
You don't have to build this routine from scratch. Little Lamb Studios' music page includes children's worship songs you can use for the song step, and our watch page has read-aloud videos that work well for the story step on nights when reading aloud yourself isn't practical. Both are free to use as part of your family's nightly rhythm.
