Starting a family Bible time can feel intimidating if you picture it as a full devotional plan with readings, discussion guides, and journaling. It doesn't have to be that. A family Bible time can be five minutes, one simple verse, and one honest conversation — and that's genuinely enough to build a real habit.

1. Start With 5 Minutes
The biggest reason family devotion habits don't stick is that they start too big. Five minutes is short enough that it never feels like a burden, and short enough that even a busy weeknight can accommodate it. You can always grow it later — but starting small is what makes it survive the first few weeks.
2. Pick One Simple Verse or Short Video

You don't need to plan a full reading schedule. One short verse is plenty for young children to sit with. For example, Psalm 34:8 in the World English Bible reads: "Oh taste and see that Yahweh is good. Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him." A verse like this is short enough to say together and simple enough for a young child to remember. On nights when reading aloud yourself feels like too much, a short Bible-verse video — like the short-form Bible Verse videos in our watch library — can fill the same role.
3. Ask One Question Together
After the verse, ask something simple: "What does that word mean to you?" or "Can you think of a time that was true?" You're not looking for a perfect theological answer — you're opening a two-minute conversation. Kids often say something unexpectedly honest when the question is simple and open-ended.
4. Be Consistent, Not Perfect
You will miss nights. That's normal, and it doesn't mean the habit has failed. What matters more than perfect attendance is returning to it the next day without guilt. A family Bible time that happens four nights a week for years does far more than one that happens every night for two weeks and then quietly disappears.
